Al Kaline has been my hero since signing with the Tigers in 1953. He and I both graduated from our respective High Schools the same spring and he signed with the "Tigs"--if memory serves me right--for $35,000. A colossal bargain by today's standards.

I understand that, at the end, the Tigers offerd Al $100,000 and he declined, saying he wasn't worth it.

One of the great players (and people) of whom I'm aware.

I moved from Michigan to California in 1968 and still can't stop being a Tiger fan.
